I need the name of a film about a journalist on death row - possibly starring Spencer Tracy.?

The film is possibly black and white and the journalist is trying to write about what the experience of being on Death Row is all about, but ends up sitting in the electric chair seconds away from the switch being flicked. Can anyone help?
